Description
Iztapalapa, officially called Iztapalapa de Cuitláhuac, is a borough located on the eastern side of Mexico City. It is one of the most densely populated areas in the city and suffers from high levels of economic deprivation. Many residents lack access to clean drinking water and the borough has a high crime rate. However, it is also home to one of Mexico City’s major cultural events – the annual Passion Play in which 450 residents participate and about 2 million people attend as spectators. Additionally, the borough is home to the Cablebús. Inaugurated in 2021, the Cablebús is an innovative aerial lift transportation system that provides residents with an alternative to the city’s congested streets. Since it’s construction, many residents painted their homes in vibrant colors and painted beautiful murals on their rooftops.
